Leaves, flowers and grass are among the most familiar elements of nature. Yet within their everyday presence lie countless variations of colour, form, texture and subtle rhythm. Contemporary artist Subarna Chakraborty Tanmoy explores these often-overlooked details in his first solo exhibition, “The Splendour of Green,” which concluded at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka.
Curated by Sumon Wahed, the week-long exhibition opened on September 22. Across the works, nature emerged as the artist’s central subject—particularly the diverse forms of leaves, the delicate variations of green and the quiet beauty of plants.
For Tanmoy, nature is more than a visual subject. It has become a field of observation, perception and experimentation with colour. Through the layering and blending of different hues, he captures subtle variations within the green of leaves, transforming close observation into a distinctive part of his visual language.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when movement was severely restricted, Tanmoy began looking at his surroundings in a different way. The plants and leaves around him gradually drew his attention, revealing forms and details that had previously gone unnoticed. Over time, this observation developed into one of the central concerns of his artistic practice.
The works in the exhibition reflect this journey in different ways. Familiar leaves are reimagined through subtle shifts of colour, arrangements of form, and an interplay of light and shadow.
One of the defining aspects of “The Splendour of Green” is its invitation to look again at the natural world that surrounds us. A leaf we pass every day, grass growing quietly beneath our feet, or a flower that briefly reveals its beauty—all become subjects worthy of sustained attention on Tanmoy’s canvases.
In this sense, the exhibition is not simply a presentation of nature’s visual forms. It also encourages viewers to reconsider the way they look at the world around them. How much of nature do we actually notice, and how much do we truly experience? Tanmoy’s works quietly bring these questions into focus.
Subarna Chakraborty Tanmoy completed his BFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, in 2022 and his MFA in 2024. His practice spans several mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolour and pencil.

In 2023, he received the Media Best Award (Watercolour) at the Annual Art Exhibition of the University of Dhaka. Earlier, in 2021, he won the Grand Award at the 26th Berger Young Painters’ Art Competition. He currently works as a freelance artist.
“The Splendour of Green” marked Tanmoy’s first solo exhibition. Held from September 22 to 29 at La Galerie, the exhibition offered a significant glimpse into the artist’s evolving visual language—where green becomes more than a colour; it becomes an invitation to pause, observe and see nature anew.
